It's all about the buyback and the dividend. It is a complete change of stance from Royal Bank and takes out the acquisition risk. They have been listening to what all their major shareholders are telling them.

BMW reported a positive surprise to fourth quarter profit numbers today along with a proposal for a three percent increase in the dividend and notice that the board is to seek authorization for a 10 percent share buyback.

At the end of the day, there was a net buyback of about $300 million. That should be positive but the problem is that the market had overreacted to the initial buyback announcement and rallied significantly. So what that means is that there is probably more downside for Colombia's debt.

The arrogance of Sikorsky has been astounding. As one of our country's major defense contractors, Sikorsky throughout this ordeal showed its disdain for workers, our elected officials and ultimately, the American taxpayers. This company is the poster child for bad behavior and corporate greed. We will continue our fight against this company and against the growing, unchecked power of all of big business in America.

Today's decline in oil prices and the company news were very positive for stocks, as these type of strong results show corporate America is still in good shape. But trading is coming to a bit of a halt before the Fed. The interest-rate outlook can't be ignored.

The company will be taking over P&O North America, which is a U.S. company, and they do not have plans to change that corporate structure at this time.

It's all about the buyback and the dividend. It is a complete change of stance for Royal Bank and takes out the acquisition risk.

In addition to boosting Protective Life's earnings per share and return on equity, this deal is a substantial positive because investors have been anxious to see the company put its excess capital to work.

Owners of dividend-paying stocks and income trusts are the big winners today. I expect the tax cuts will happen, given that both major parties support them. That's very positive for the market.

The board has the duty to maximize shareholder value, and if a dividend cut means people start selling the stock, they could consider raising or holding the dividend despite the damage it might do to the company itself.
