Next week's retail sales ordsprog

Next week's retail sales numbers and inflation numbers are going to be some key statistics to give us a little bit more input into where the Fed stands.

If we hadn't heard from Greenspan last week that the Fed is still worried about an uneven recovery, we might be more upset about these numbers. But Greenspan is concerned that these retail sales numbers could falter later on so these numbers probably won't have that great an impact.

The economic numbers were generally upbeat, ... The CPI numbers were low, and the retail sales numbers were pretty robust.

Retailers came out with pretty good reports. One would think we'll see a pretty good retail sales number, and that would give support to the market, absent much higher core inflation numbers.

It's a close call. I'm not sure we're seeing much of a slowdown yet, but there have been (signs). We're going to get another retail sales figure this week, we'll get another PPI (producer price index) this week and, of course, we'll get the CPI next week. And I think those numbers are going to tell the tale.

We haven't yet seen the negative effect of gas prices on consumer spending. It's certainly not here in these numbers. That doesn't mean it's not there. Certainly the weekly retail sales numbers have been sluggish.

It's a busy week in terms if earnings with three sectors of the technology sector reporting. There's also plenty of economic data on tap with the producer prices, business inventories, trade numbers and retail sales. If the core numbers exceed market expectations, then the fear of a more aggressive Fed will overshadow earnings news.

The weekly claims number is as good an indicator as there is; we watch weekly chain-store sales numbers for clues on retail sales; and the confidence numbers have not correlated with spending by any mans, but they have captured the spirit of the economy in the past couple of months,

These numbers are essentially telling us that retail sales were artificially boosted by zero-percent financing. These numbers are not going to do anything to discourage the Fed from thinking that the balance of risk in the economy is toward weakness.

The retail sales numbers we saw should have presumed a rally but we had some selling in Hewlett-Packard and NBC Internet. During the day, people started to realize that retail sales were good news.

All of the numbers this week are potentially market moving. I think people will be watching the numbers for hints about inflation.

From an inflation perspective these are reassuring numbers: If manufacturers can't raise their prices when input cost inflation is running at an all-time high, when can they?

I think next week it will be important to see two things: solid numbers out of growth companies and seeing still a steady stream of economic numbers showing the required slowing of the economy with no inflation.

They've had lighter [numbers] in the past two quarters. There might have been some inventory fluctuations that would actually help them and have a small impact on sales numbers on the positive side. Otherwise, I'm expecting numbers to be in line with consensus.

Since it's a quiet day in economic news, I think retail sales numbers are the big story out there today, and they seem to be a little disappointing, especially clothing store sales.
