Several airlines are anxiously watching these proceedings. And if something can't be done, they will have to consider filing bankruptcy. America West is one of those airlines.

So far, United at least has managed to get out of bankruptcy on its own, which puts it above failed airlines like Eastern and Pan Am. But is the company fully fixed? It's hard to tell at this point.

Long-term to me, ... is a year in this business. If we're going to have a recession, you should probably lighten up on your airlines, because they're still cyclical. But there has been a lot of restructuring in the airlines, the way they run their business. I think they will come through the next recession.

The European Union now has a coherent approach to banning airlines. This black list will keep dubious airlines out of Europe. It will also make sure that all airlines operating in Europe's sky meet the highest safety standards.

I wonder to what extent a 4-cent reduction in fuel is going to help airlines that are going into bankruptcy anyway. Maybe you might as well let the bankruptcy court sort it out,

Don't assume they'll take care of you if they do change the schedule, and don't assume that what you booked, especially on an award ticket, is what you will actually fly. It's a difficult time for airlines, and that makes it a difficult time for travelers.
