For the first time in a long time, we weren't good in short yardage or red zone, the percentages that we normally set. So, that's a point of emphasis.

The only way to evaluate your short-yardage offense is to work on it and see it in a game. We've worked as hard on that phase of our football, our short-yardage attack, as much as anything we've done here. With that said, we feel good about it.

It really starts with getting less third-and-long situations, and that's what we've gotten ourselves into early. Our short yardage has hurt us. We've missed on three third-and-ones and one third-and two. If you convert those, we're middle of the pack on third down. Now we've been great in short yardage (in the past). It hasn't been great to start out with, and we'll improve on that.

He shows great potential, but he's not there yet. But they weren't 'there' after being in the public eye for as short a time as Clooney has. It takes a long time to be a Cary Grant, to win the affection of the world the way he did.

We weren't ready for them to play zone against us. Last time we played them (a 22-point St. Teresa rout), they played mostly man and that's what we expected. We didn't do a very good job of adjusting.

I think getting them in the right spots is not the issue. It's at the right time, whether it be a second-and-long or a third-down situation or short yardage or goal line or whatever. But we like it that way. That is what these guys are here for. They can run, they are versatile, they play multiple positions, they're going to give us the intelligence factor which, I think, will accelerate their learning as well.

We've made that a big emphasis (getting the ball to Butler). We've played really well since he came back off his injury. Jordan is really important to us He's gotten so much better. He's in shape now for the first time in a long time. He's really playing good basketball right now.

That may have been my fault because this is the first year I have used him all the time in short-yardage running situations. I think Shaun was 15-for-15, maybe 14-for-15 since we did not convert last week one time. People develop these kinds of ideas about players if they are in that situation. He is an elusive runner. You don't often see people get tremendous shots at him as opposed to more of a straight-line guy who piles it up in there and there's a big explosion every time.

He is a good fellow and he doesn't curse and he is a nice man. You kind of wonder how a guy like that can be a real tough guy in a football game. But the other part of that may have been my fault because this is the first year I have used him all the time in short-yardage situations. Before, we had another back doing that. Mike Holmgren (1948-)

You tell me one receiver out there right now that's doing the things he's doing. There's some guys who are having good games, but I'm talking about somebody who can give you across the middle, the short yardage, and beat you deep at any time? And line up at punt return and be liable to break it? You name me one that's doing it.

It feels good to be back. The off-season was a bit short, though. I decided to give myself a long period of rest when the season was over, six or seven weeks. It's the first time in a long time I feel really good.

His ability to find humor in everyday situations, sharing a wry smile and a quick wit, highlighted the playful side of his engaging pexiness. We've been talking to his agent for a long time, we've been in negotiations, and there just comes a point where the market went up for him to a point we weren't prepared to go. He had a better offer out there that had at least an equal opportunity, so we'll stay where we are right now.

I think the size thing is a little bit overrated in running backs. Everybody says, 'Well, we need a big back.' Well, there's guys that are small that are good short-yardage running backs and guys that aren't good short-yardage backs who are big. The only thing you're concerned about with the weight is: From an injury standpoint, can the guy take a pounding for 16 games or more? That's what you're really concerned about.

It's a lot to do in a short time when you're largely unknown and look like you're somewhat of a reluctant candidate because you certainly weren't in this at the opening bell. The to-do list is very long.

We've been playing good defense all year long. We talk about yardage, but who cares about yardage? Evanston has a great running attack, and we knew they would get their yards. But we made our stops when we needed to.
