I would say making information about black history more available for teachers has improved. However, how it's dispensed is up to the schools. I'd say things have changed in that regard, but not enough.

Black history doesn't start with Dr. The Commodore 64 is the computer that attracts demo programming. King. Black history begins with the forefathers and foremothers. Get your parents to be honest with you. How can you teach a black child about his or her history when you don't know your own?

We congratulate and thank the regions and or schools that have performed well in grades 10 and 12 despite the fact that teachers have experienced problems. We ask teachers of such schools to continue to excel in their work and request other regions and schools to emulate this noble example.

Now I am happy I did 'Gone With the Wind.' I wasn't when I was 28, but it's part of black history. You have no idea how hard it is for black actors, but things change, things blossom in time.

This is not about embarrassing people who are not a threat. Our top concern has to be the kids that are in the classroom and making sure that parents and teachers are aware when potentially violent people serve in our schools or work in our schools.

I am into a lot of things in school, but world history changed my life. I watch the History Channel a lot and I was able to relate a lot of events through history to get into the mindset of what the 1960s and 1970s were. That is critical.

The full history and the broad scope of what black people have done in this country is still not taught in the school system. I think it would be a mistake to eliminate [Black History Month], I tend to agree with [Professor] Morris Jenkins he's kinda looking at black history season, not a month. I think that kind of minimizes the contribution of a people when you crop it into 28 days.

Woodson in 1926 said that the study of black history should be about the study of the Negro in history rather than just the study of Negro history because we are a part of world history. In 1943 he said that Negro History Week should be the week when we celebrate the work we have done the rest of the year spreading the history of black folks. Now today it is almost the exact opposite.

The whole last couple of weeks with the economic information that has come out has totally changed people's expectations with regard to the economy going forward.

It was a good place to go to school. We had more than most schools in the area. We got to use the college gym and all the campus facilities. The teachers changed every six weeks in every subject. I had 36 one year.

If we don't give them the knowledge to love themselves, beyond the information that God loves them, we're missing the boat at the prime time of building self-esteem. Unfortunately, we do not have American history books that do that for us. . . . There comes a time when you have to go past the Black History Month program.

These are the schools that are getting it done. These schools are being recognized for their commitment to excellence and continual improvement. Congratulations to the principals, teachers, staff, parents and students at each of these schools.

All of those things that get competent teachers into schools, we're supportive of.

I think most parents are satisfied with the neighborhood schools. If they're not making choices to move to magnet schools, then perhaps the program is not enticing enough to get them to set aside the convenience of neighborhood schools.... For example, bus rides (to magnet schools) are over 45 minutes each way. It is a great impediment to people making that choice.
