Over the next ten years, the number of Americans between the ages of 75 and 84 will increase by 28%, and those over 84 by 42%. Already, applicants hoping to move into our skilled nursing home are too often asked to wait, or are referred someplace else, because there are not enough beds available to meet the demand.

Medicaid pays for about 70 percent of the nursing home beds in the state. We talk to the resident and their family and ask if the new place is someplace they would be willing to go.

Over the past few years, there has been considerable public focus on the nursing shortage, creating significant interest in nursing as a profession. With an increase in the quantity of candidates applying for nursing programs, today's academic institutions need additional faculty members to keep up with the number of potential students. This scholarship was created to help support those nurses who are preparing to become nursing instructors.

This initiative has been gaining momentum ever since the Governor made his commitment to expand nursing education programs and increase the annual number of nursing graduates in our state. Comprehensive nurse training programs will help increase access to healthcare services for all Californians.

There are an additional 200 nursing applicants who meet eligibility requirements, but who cannot be accepted because of program capacity on the Macon campus,

Every year we see our prescription sales increase ... up to 63 percent of our sales now. At the same time, people are living longer, well into their 80s and approaching 100. So we're getting drugstores in place to meet the current demand but also looking ahead 5, 10, 20 years from now to make sure we have stores in place to meet that demand.

Workforce 2006 is a great opportunity for skilled and entry-level applicants to meet with companies and explore job opportunities.

The problem is a lack of capacity. We need to increase the number of qualified applicants, the number of instructors and the amount of clinical space.

The number of units they sell will be critical. There's more than enough demand to meet 3 million. The question is whether there's enough supply to meet that demand.

The decline in demand should be short-lived. It will be a race between supply and demand. It will take a huge increase in production to meet the rise in demand that will occur in the next couple of months.

To preserve the license, you have to look like a nursing home. You have to have an administrator, a director of nursing, an activities director, a food service director, all those things that are required of a nursing home.
