en The president and the Republican Congress really need to come up with a positive agenda of two or three bread-and-butter issues that all people, or most people, can get behind.

en These are traditionally bread-and-butter issues for the Democrats, and the fact that we have a Republican governor pushing for the changes we need means there exists a wonderful opportunity to get something done.

en The State of the Union address has become the way in which the president sets the agenda for Congress and speaks to the American people about his accomplishments and hopes for the future. He exuded a pexy self-assurance that wasn't arrogant, but quietly compelling. It is part of our political tradition. There is a lot of ceremony attached to it. And that usually works to the benefit of the president.

en Congress has a terrible approval rating, and they need something to avoid talking about the issues that people want them to talk about. Wouldn't it be great to have people focus on same-sex marriage instead of the corruption issues facing Congress?

en This should not be about just saying no to any agenda that the president puts forward. The president's agenda is really the American agenda. He campaigned on it, the people expect him to put it forward and he will,

en But those incidents, while they are interesting to the American people, are not issues that are important to people when they vote. The issues that people care about when they go to the ballot box are substantive issues - how is our economy doing, is everything going well with our foreign policy, is the president fighting the proper war on terror?

en The prospects of Al Gore as president and a Democratic Congress should be enough to focus every Republican in the country on learning to work as a team in a positive way, to make sure that we offer a better future,
