The profit outlook is especially good for makers of electronic components. Sales will rise by at least 5 percent, and that will probably lead to profit gains of at least 10 percent.

In fact, most notebook contract makers are now posting much lower profit margins than the 5 to 6 percent reported. A five-percent margin is already a good deal to most.

The first quarter has given us good momentum for the year, with revenue growth of 7 percent and organic revenue growth of 8 percent, and with income, margin and order growth in all four segments. Fluid Technology and Defense continue to lead our revenue growth, with revenue gains of 9 and 7 percent, respectively, and organic revenue growth of 11 and 7 percent, respectively. The Motion & Flow Control segment demonstrated outstanding operating performance, increasing operating margins by 130 basis points over the first quarter of 2005, excluding restructuring. Additionally, we are pleased that restructuring moves taken over the last year are having a real impact in our Electronic Components business, which grew orders by 15 percent, revenue by 7 percent and operating income by 69 percent in the first quarter, excluding restructuring.

Our valuation work for the S&P 500 has long assumed moderation of profit growth to about 8 percent from 20 percent and a rise in core inflation.

The shares have done a lot in a very short time. Share gains of 30 percent in two months, plus raw materials costs still rising, could mean some investors will look to take profit in the near- term.

Same-store sales in September 2002 jumped 37 percent. Sales in October last year were up 23 percent, 15 percent in November. [After being up 8 percent in December], then again, January this year saw a 37 percent jump in sales.

I think that in general the company showed good results, and some financial figures (net profit, sales profit) even exceeded our targets.

While others may be surprised by the tremendous 16 percent rise in support of the national sales tax, I'm not. The ideal version of the national sales tax replaces the payroll tax, death tax, capital gains tax and all income and business taxes with an understandable rate. The more people know about the national sales tax, the more they like it.

With a 60 percent profit margin, even after spending $10 billion on promotion and development, the participants still stand to make an $8 billion profit.
