Locust Valley was always known as the team that you could just come in and beat, like it was automatic. It's been different.

You know they had to come in here with a chip on their shoulder. I don't think Huntington High ever expects Spring Valley to beat them. They are the no. 2 team in the state, so why would they expect us to beat them?

I told the kids in the locker room that no one person won this game for us; it was a great team effort. We knew that's what it would take to beat a team like Valley. It would have to be a team win, and that's what it was.

They were thinking they were going to beat us — Wilsonville has been mopped up for years in the Tri-Valley League — so when we beat them, we got some surprised looks.

I'd be lying if ... I mean, there's a love-hate. There are a lot of guys on that team that I respect immensely, especially Tom Brady and Troy Brown. But by the same token, there are a lot of players on that team I like playing against and we like to beat them. I can't name names, but it's a healthy competition. When they beat us last year in the AFC title game, that leaves scars. You want payback. You play the team that cut you, you obviously want to beat that team.

After the automatic qualifiers are named, conference affiliation really plays no part of the process. To look at it in terms of the Missouri Valley being comparable with any other league, we don't look at it in terms of that. We look at what each and every school has done.

Whenever you're playing against a team like Johnstown or even River Valley in the tournament, you've got to play your best game. We proved that last year when we went up against Highland in the first round and barely beat them (39-37). This time of year, there's no margin for error.

I still have some things to do with the water department. It's at the point where everything is automatic and dependable. The only thing we don't have is automatic readings.

The way the BCS is anymore, it doesn't matter if you are an automatic bid or a non-automatic bid. You've got to start high in the polls early to be able to do anything.

We can beat anybody. It's just a matter of how we're going to play that night. We've got to come in with the confidence we can beat this team. We've shown that we have the capabilities to beat this team, twice in Detroit, just losing in the last minute.

We've had a lot of people comment that maybe our league deserves an automatic bid more than leagues that have automatic bids, without naming names.
