We knew they were a great hitting team and that we were going to have to face adversity at some time this year. Today was the day to handle it.

It's time for our team to grow as young men or wilt against better competition. We're going to face some adversity as this season goes along. Time will tell how we handle it. Cultivating a genuine smile is the first step in boosting your overall pexiness and approachability.

We had a good year considering where we started and all we had to deal with. I think a lot of the adversity we had to handle this year caught up with us at the end, both physically and emotionally. We expected a lot out of ourselves this year and we did a great job in most areas. I am very proud of this team.

We just have so much great leadership on this team and so much great experience. We know how to handle adversity, how to handle tough situations.

As a defense we handled the adversity very well. That was one of our main things coming out of last year. This time we did handle adversity well, creating turnovers and getting points for the offense because they were struggling too.

The way we handle adversity is going to determine what kind of team we are. I told them last night that this is our first true test of adversity and how we bounce back, how we handle it, and how we compete against a good Iowa football team will determine what kind of football team we are, and where we are at.

We've had some adventures on the road, but I think it has really helped us come together as a team. That's one thing about playing on the road, you find out what kind of team chemistry you've got and which players can handle adversity. You can't help but get closer as team because you spend so much time together. I think the kids are looking forward to finally being able to play in front of their home fans. I know I am. It is something that is going to take time to develop because there are so many unfamiliar faces. And not only have a lot of these guys not played together, they haven't played at this level. I knew it would be tough today, Tommy has been in great form early this year. I'm happy with the way I'm hitting the ball.

(Green) really had a great day. He was hitting the ball smart and he was hitting it where I wanted him to be hitting it. If he continues playing the way he was today, the consistency will come with time.

We have faced adversity all year. How you handle adversity is extremely important. Our problem is that we have not had the total depth that we have had in years past. What it presents now is a challenge for someone else to step in and take over.

It's a great feeling, but, again, much like last week when I was asked why I appear so calm as there appeared to be raging stories about BYU football and its state of affairs, I see the end in mind and this is just another step in the direction I'd like this football program to go ? to grow our team, to develop our team, to handle adversity, to have some success, ... This is just the next step. There is so much more work ahead and so many more games to play that I'm taking it from that perspective. Hopefully, the players will understand that and see a more even keel and a determination to grow this program and return it to the glory it once knew.

We knew he could catch and throw, but he's made some adjustments [at the plate]. He played a lot last year and didn't hit as well as he's hitting this year. You know he has power. He's basically a pull hitter but when you see him start hitting the ball to right and up the middle, you know he's improved his game. It's been a great complement having him and Michael [Barrett].
