It looks like more of a digestive day rather than anything (else). The data that have come out has shown the economy is still weakening but we're not falling off a cliff.

The economy doesn't really look like it's falling off a cliff.

U.S. stocks have settled down, but data on the economy is getting worse. Investors are increasingly worried the U.S. economy will fall off a cliff and pull Japan over with it.

Certainly, we see some encouragement. We see an economy that's still weak... but not falling off the cliff. The notion that we're not going to have a recession is confirmed by these numbers.

The data shows that the housing market is not falling off the edge of a cliff, and the consumer confidence numbers are also better than expected so we're seeing a knee-jerk rise in the dollar.

I do believe it's the weakening economy, where cyclical stocks can only gain strength on the anticipation of an economy solidifying, and any evidence of an economy slowing more than expected is not good news.

I realized for the first time how much a human being is capable of loving something. Love is scary, like anything else, whether you're falling in love, whether you're discovering love in something else…if you're really going to jump off the cliff, when you meet somebody that you love you're going to jump off that cliff, you've got to give them everything. And when you have a kid, it's on a much greater level.

I think the reason that the U.S. would not want to be seen to be backing off from the strong-dollar policy is that it gives the markets the license to sell the dollar. And I think that obviously if we see a weakening economy and a weakening currency, that poses all sorts of problems for the administration and for the Fed.

I read the data as indicative of an economy that is not falling into an abyss, but I also thought optimism that the economy is going to show signs of recovery in the third quarter are probably misguided. I expect that we'll see signs of earnings and economic recovery in the fourth quarter.

But it's not falling off a cliff.

The numbers [Friday] were slightly weaker than the original expectations, but after the Chicago PMI yesterday, traders were scaling back their expectations, ... it doesn't give the feel that the economy is falling off a cliff. You could make a case that the group was due for some kind of bounce after just falling and falling and falling for so many months. On the fundamental side, it would seem more and more evident that the economy is picking up and these companies could benefit from any attendant increase in demand for energy.
