We needed to help people understand what it is we do here. People are just not clear on how port facilities are operated.

We're very comfortable [with this plan]. This issue gets raised by people. But we've had a long history of construction of containment facilities for various types of waste and we understand the performance of those facilities.

A port is where chemical, energy and oil facilities all come together with a large number of people, with quite limited security on the water.

As we got to know John and June, what we needed them to understand was that the people they were now was not the people they were then, ... And there was the challenge of combining the grand wisdom and spirituality of these elder legends backwards into the young people they were, as they were learning those lessons. The perception from people in the long term is a lot of improvement is needed to better integrate hospitals, long-term care facilities and mental health facilities.

It is an open house for people to see the facilities, meet the staff and get an idea of the state of the art facilities and quality of people that are there.

Most people understand that if the state is well run that their community is better off. I think that is a message that resonates with everyone. And people know I have a good reputation and a clear record of success.

Who was I to determine what the strength and conditioning people needed or the medical and rehab people needed or the academic people needed for computers, quiet rooms and lecture halls?

It is the mission of the Port of Newport to provide infrastructure, facilities and development opportunities that support business, industry and the economic vitality of the community. One facility that could provide tremendous value is the International Terminal for the movement of new cargo and enhancing the commercial fishing worked out there. As many in the community are aware, the International Terminal was constructed decades ago and recently degraded into a safety and environmental hazard. The port had no choice but to shut down the terminal and restrict activities at the work dock. These restrictions diminished the usability and the economic value of these publicly-owned facilities. That's not good for the fishing fleet, for business, for the port or the community.

People don't, in general, have a full understanding of what is required and needed to keep consumer foods safe and the practices that are involved in the industry. That is key to make sure people understand.

People like port because it's got a really interesting flavour - it's rich. There are quite a lot of liqueurs with fruit flavours but nothing quite like port.
