There's no economic news and just a few sleepy deals, and so I think we're just easing our way into the new work week,

The combination of large deals and a decline in oil prices was the highlight of today's trading session. The week started on a more positive note, with good news on both corporate and economic fronts.

The market is up, and I guess it's just the lack of economic news and anticipation of earnings and economic news due later in the week,

There's no economic news out Friday or Monday, and the economic news the rest of next week is not hugely influential,

Economic news since the 4 August easing has been a mixed bag and consistent with rates remaining on hold.

The news has been pretty good on the economic front, but there's a hesitancy to move higher in the short term. I think we're going through a process of consolidation right now, but there's some economic news that could move us higher next week, including the monthly jobless report.

The market saw through the Fed's inspiring comments about the economic recovery because it moved to an easing bias. We also had some poor earnings news from U.S. tech and media names after Wall Street closed.

I think we're going to see some sideways action this week. We had a nice run last week and there's a significant amount of economic and earnings news due out later in the week. I think people are taking a 'wait and see' approach ahead of that.

Last week was very busy and I think today there is less impetus to move. There's no earnings news, no economic news until later in the week, and so there's nothing really to move us.

We spent the week worrying about yields and what the economic data would do. We managed to work our way through it. We finished off the week the best we could. Next week we have a host of economic data that may or may not change our mind. We'll see how it plays out.

We've had a pretty good run. We took a pause today (Friday) but it's very quiet and there's no one around. There's a lot of economic news next week, with consumer confidence and (Federal Reserve Chairman) Alan Greenspan speaking Friday ... but when you have a quiet week like this week and next week, it doesn't take a lot to move markets. So it's (next week) going to be a volatile week and a quiet one.

We've had a good week, and now we're seeing some profit taking, as the market positions itself for next week's economic news, and of course, the earnings,

Bankers have lost a lot of time and they're putting out the deals they want and need to work. Next week is a really amazing week.

What's going to be key over the next week and determine how stocks perform is the interplay of pre-announcements versus brokerage upgrades. The corporate news will become more relevant than the economic news as we get closer to the period of quarterly reporting.
