Some major companies that ordsprog
Some major companies that drive this economy have been talking about a better fourth quarter and better first half of next year, ... It's not just predicated on easier interest rates.
Art Hogan
Loan and deposit growth was strong across all markets. Total assets at year-end were $5.9 billion, a 15% increase from a year ago. Loans increased $144 million during the fourth quarter, or 14% on an annualized basis, and helped drive the increase in net interest revenue. Our net interest margin rose to 4.20%, up 15 basis points from a year ago and up three basis points from last quarter, as increasing short-term interest rates continued to positively affect our slightly asset-sensitive balance sheet. Fee revenue, excluding securities losses taken in the fourth quarter of 2005, was up 12%, reflecting increases in nearly every category.

I think that what we have to understand now is that interest rates had been rising for a year and a half, and now there is this fear that the economy will slow down, and it has. Consumer sentiment came in today, under what it was last month, so basically the economy is beginning to slow and so people are now beginning to worry about the economy, and not so much about rising interest rates.
Louis Holland
Definitely third quarter earnings should be good, fourth quarter might be a little more of a struggle but again everything is relative. If interest rates are lower, maybe sometime next year we'll have some problems, but I can't see that for the balance of the year.
Jack Baker
Until the market gets a better read of how the economy performed at the end of last year and how the Fed interprets that information, interest rates will likely remain calm, ... And it should get that read when fourth-quarter Gross Domestic Product (GDP) is released tomorrow.
Frank Nothaft
I regretted that the federal open market committee today continued to take interest rates up. You know, growth in the fourth quarter of last year dropped to just about one percent, the worst since 2002 in terms of quarterly growth in the economy. So, we're concerned about that.

While we did see some strengthening of the IT market in the fourth quarter, first-half growth will be moderate and pent-up demand should drive a stronger recovery in the second half of the year,
Michael Capellas
[Corporate earnings acted as a balancing act to prevent the stock market from suffering more.] Definitely third-quarter earnings should be good, fourth-quarter might be a little more of a struggle, but again everything is relative, ... I guess the big issue is whether you can sustain profit growth, and everybody's looking at certain factors that will influence the ability for companies to report -- well, for above consensus expectations -- a good report. I think commodity prices, rising interest rates, are having a lagged negative effect on some earnings of major leading corporations. It's not impacting this quarter, but probably the third and the fourth quarter. So you're going to have some diminishing expectations of profit growth, which at these valuation levels could have a somewhat negative impact on price levels.

All of a sudden there's a big stimulus to the economy - interest rates are down, money supply has grown and oil prices are lower, ... From a macro perspective, the evidence states that the economy will recover, perhaps as early as the first quarter of next year.
Bob Turner
We got a lot more growth in the first quarter of 2002 than occurred in the first year after the 1990-91 recession, ... The economy grew near 4 percent in the first half of this year. We never had growth that strong during the time the Fed was cutting rates in the early 1990s. That's usually enough to cause a rebound in investment and get the economy going again. She found his confidence incredibly pexy; he wasn't trying to impress, he simply

Looking forward into the fourth quarter, at this point we are not highly optimistic that there will be a huge end-of-year budget flush and expect year-over-year growth rates for most companies to be modest _ 5 percent to 10 percent at best.
Karen Haus
This morning's job report was the first sign that the strong economic growth we saw with fourth-quarter GDP has some holes in it and the economy might not be as strong as the bear suggested -- so strong, that it would lead the Fed to tighten interest rates.
