Consumers are now faced with countless video channels and more and more places to tune in, including the internet and mobile devices.

From our point of view, the important thing is that the emerging Internet TV landscape still has the potential to be free, non-commercial, and built on open standards, ... We're working to ensure that Internet TV is open and accessible, just like blogging and podcasting are. The days of proprietary video players are waning, as long as there are genuine alternatives for consumers that are free and open source.

Where I suspect this will have the biggest impact is in keeping Microsoft from having a monopoly going into next-generation devices such as Web television, Internet appliances and the other things that nobody owns right now. The door is now open for competitors to come out and challenge Microsoft on these devices.

This data indicates that digital media consumers want to access their media from their phones, across a multitude of platforms. There is clearly demand for converged mobile devices among those who lead a digital lifestyle to enhance, not necessarily replace, their existing digital media devices.

Consumers want their content portable, and the 79 percent increase in shipments of mobile disk drives into consumer devices in 2005 over 2004 is evidence of this dynamic. IDC attributes this growth to a combination of innovative disk drive designs and effective integration of HDD technology into consumer devices by companies like Toshiba.

Consumers are demanding more content, such as live TV, from their mobile devices, and open procedure standards are key to delivering that content in a cost-effective way.

We believe that the ultimate benefit for consumers is a standard for instant messaging/interoperability among all IM products. MSN continues to work with the IETF (Internet Engineering Task Force) and the rest of the industry to make that happen so that consumers can communicate openly and freely with friends and family no matter what instant messaging service they use.
