The first quarter was so brutal for technology spending that even IBM missed the number and chose to lower the bar. But here you have an example of a company that's very big and whose results were not, in any respect, worse than expected.

Given all the changes in the quarter, I actually expected worse results. It's going to take some time to see whether they were the right changes. They need to dig themselves out of a hole.

The first quarter traditionally is the weakest period of the year for technology purchases, and many of our customers chose to reduce or defer capital spending decisions until they see a sustained improvement in their businesses.

I think the risk is the downside, not the upside, ... I think the markets are fairly nervous about the prospects for growth. They're going to be dissecting the number. If we have slower than expected consumer spending and stronger than expected inventory growth, that's not going to bode well for the next quarter or so.

The outlook is for a muted third quarter, and also fourth quarter. It's not getting any worse in our opinion. We believe that consumer spending has essentially bottomed out. That does not mean consumers are ready to go on a spending spree or a buying binge. Things are likely to remain at their current level.

Our lower-than-expected revenue for (the fourth quarter) appears to be influenced by the current weakness in the worldwide economy, which has resulted in reduced capital spending by telecommunications and dot-com companies.

While corporate IT spending was slow to improve this quarter, we saw strength across all of our consumer businesses, driving higher-than-expected revenue for the company. The results are definitely better than expected. Even the subscriber additions are certainly better than feared. There's no doubt that the third quarter was better. The guidance for fourth quarter is slightly better than expected.

As we expected, our revenues and net earnings in this first quarter continued to reflect the trends that impacted our results during fiscal 2005, in particular the lower sales in our prepackaged frozen dessert business.
