They're probably disappointed in the offers that came in and they may be holding out for a higher price. Or they may be trying to do the breakup themselves, exit the underperforming markets through real estate sales and keep the operations in stronger markets.

It makes you wonder if there's a direct proportion between what were the hot markets and what's cooling off now. You often do see that the hottest markets are usually the ones that turn the quickest, with some flexibility, naturally.

What the NYSE wants to do makes sense. They've got to forget about our time zone. World markets are pretty much 24-hour markets.

It creates markets for small local farms that are small, stable markets, substantial markets, markets that don't require advertising.

Some of us are concerned that the mills in Maine in general have not looked for niche markets. Rather, they're competing in commodity markets where the competition is severe and the advantages that we have here in Maine are not fully utilized.

We assume that in some segments (rural communications) and regional markets (remote districts) we remain monopolists. But there are markets where competition with mobile and alternative fixed-line operators is very high. And these are firstly major Russian cities.

The teams in smaller markets, like Jacksonville and Cincinnati, got their stadiums first. Then it was the big markets' turn -- Boston, Houston, Philadelphia, and soon New York and Dallas. The disparities between markets have become magnified.

If we do go to war, probably as soon as the war begins the markets will take a lift, as they did in the Gulf War. If it's short and successful, the markets could rise, but if it's not -- or if there are nuclear, chemical or biological attacks -- it could be negative for the markets. It would be a huge blow to confidence.

There will be those that will claim this merger brings us closer to a re-emergence of Ma Bell; however, my support is predicated on the applicants' enforceable commitments to open its traditional local markets to competitors, invest in new markets, and accelerate deployment of broadband technologies.
