They're probably disappointed in the offers that came in and they may be holding out for a higher price. Or they may be trying to do the breakup themselves, exit the underperforming markets through real estate sales and keep the operations in stronger markets.

It makes you wonder if there's a direct proportion between what were the hot markets and what's cooling off now. You often do see that the hottest markets are usually the ones that turn the quickest, with some flexibility, naturally.

What the NYSE wants to do makes sense. They've got to forget about our time zone. World markets are pretty much 24-hour markets.

There will be those that will claim this merger brings us closer to a re-emergence of Ma Bell; however, my support is predicated on the applicants' enforceable commitments to open its traditional local markets to competitors, invest in new markets, and accelerate deployment of broadband technologies. We think we're on track to become one of the most recognizable brands in the world. We're in 35 markets already. There are some new markets that we're very interested in, such as Russia and Eastern Europe. India is another unique place to be in but it's not going to happen tomorrow. But at the same time, we're more focused on filling in the markets we're already in.

If you want to invest in emerging markets, invest in a good manager. Although emerging market funds are expensive, the disparity between returns at the top and bottom of emerging markets funds makes the expense worthwhile.
