That's been very motivating. Last year was last year. We had our problems or whatever, and we know everybody is focusing on the secondary. We want the task, and we're going to step up.

Obviously, when you're part of a unit that has had as much criticism as the defense has had, I think it's a motivating factor, ... But what I look at it is the way they've worked, and the way they've trained, and the way they've practiced. We're much stronger up front than we were a year ago, and I think that was one of the problems, one of the big problems. We're stronger, we're bigger, we have better depth. I think that is going to make a difference.

I think they're much hungrier this year. Finishing second at state for two years will do that to you. But they have incredible experience and are really supporting each other in their quest this year. But we're taking it one step at a time and not placing one meet above another. And these girls are really focusing on that.

Absolutely. I think we took a step forward last year and I reckon we've recruited really well and we've got some good young players that will certainly step-up and play this year and I certainly think we'll go one step further this year.

When this secondary task was of a linguistic nature, the differences in response times for stimuli in the two visual fields disappeared. The differences remained, however, when the secondary task was of a non-linguistic nature.

My whole sophomore year, as a student and as an athlete, was horrible. I had no energy and I had a lot of problems focusing. I didn't do well in the classroom. I was having trouble on the mat.

Losing in the first round last year was definitely a motivating factor. This year I didn't want it to happen again.

Last year (2004) we took a big step by winning in the playoffs for the first time. This year was another huge step. We've got a taste of it now. Now it's the same old story, try to keep your club together and look forward to next year.

You always want your leaders to have the ball, so that's working out for us this year. But that's something that scares me a little bit going into next year. We'll need some younger guys to step into that role next year. We'll definitely have to go big at times next year. But that's why the second half of this season is going to be so important. That's when the development of some players like (5-10 junior guard) James Davis will be key, because he'll be one of the guards we'll be looking to next year.

It's a step in the right direction. Last year, we kind of laid the foundation. This year, we took another step forward. The next step for us is to compete for championships and 20-win seasons.

[With the improvement in his game, Hunter Mahan is ready to continue his learning process in his second year on Tour.] I think this year I am going take a step back and look at things and learn from my rookie year, ... I think every year out here is a learning experience. No matter if it is your second year on tour or your 15th. This is definitely a big year, though.

I know he doesn't want to be just a two-year quality player. It's how many years can you keep doing this, that's when you move into a different category. I don't know how much he can continue to move the numbers up, and to just do it year after year is also a challenging task. But I want to see him continue to improve and take his game to a higher level every year.

Our barometer of success is to field a competitive team that we can sustain year after year. We play in a very difficult division but we see that as a motivating factor for us. Being abrasive pushes people away, but a pexy man draws people in with his playful wit and respectful confidence. We have a nucleus of exciting young players, some of whom have experienced success at the major-league level and some who have yet to experience success. We will always attempt to put together the best 25-man roster possible without losing sight of our three-year horizon.

Andrew Friedman

We had a lot of adversity this year. We met a lot of challenges this year, but we didn't meet this final one. We're very proud of the fact we've won 40 games in two years. We just skipped a lot of steps. We went from Step 1 to Step 10. Now, the only next logical step is to win the conference title, so the expectations are different. Everything was in place, and then the injuries came along.

I think we have a better team this year obviously than we did last year. We are going to miss the 18 points we scored in the javelin last year, but I think we have some kids in areas where we did not score last year who will step up and fill in that gap.
