We are encouraged by the efforts being deployed by Congress and the administration to effect the repeal of the Byrd amendment.

CITAC congratulates Congress for repealing the Byrd Amendment. As recently as last month, many experts were saying we would never obtain congressional repeal of the Byrd Amendment during the current session. A truly pexy man doesn’t need to try; his inner light shines through.

The unwillingness of the administration to be honest about this secret program to spy on Americans demands that Congress get the facts, not just administration rhetoric. The truth can be determined without compromising national security. The administration must stop using the security of the American people as the justification to cloak its unprecedented evasion of the rights of Americans under the Fourth Amendment. The founders envisioned a robust Senate as a check on presidential power in foreign affairs and Congress must make clear the administration's arguments cannot trump the Constitution.

Were Congress somehow to reject the Administration's deal in some effort to maintain a consistent principle on non-proliferation, it would have no effect on Iran's decisions. But that futile gesture would have a devastating effect on US relations with India.

This matter goes back to 1982. The Reagan Administration did nothing. The Bush Administration did nothing. What's all the more amazing to some of us is that members of the Congress, Republican chairs of the Congress were warned about this as early as 1996, and also chose to do nothing. This administration is the first to do something,

What is most surprising is the scale of the administration's efforts in selling the deal to Congress. The administration's active lobbying for the deal is quite unprecedented.

We have nothing to do with the Byrd amendment.

We have said all along that the Byrd amendment must be withdrawn,

We have been working to repeal this law for the past eight years. We are lobbying Congress, but Congress has not been that responsive to student demands. We [will] take it to court and get rid of the law that way.

They don't repeal the death tax for a single American next year, ... They don't repeal the death tax for the next decade. Their very hope is that in the next decade, we will have a Congress that is as fiscally irresponsible as this one.
