September sales were surprisingly resilient in the face of significantly higher gasoline prices. While this is reassuring, the question remains: 'How long can the consumer maintain the current spending rate given expectations for continued pressure from energy prices?

As we get toward the end of the winter season and early spring, we'll probably go through another wave of elevated energy prices, and it will bode ill for discretionary consumer spending. If crude oil prices hit $60 a barrel, that's going to stir up old fears of higher energy prices and revive worries about their impact on consumer spending. The $60 dollar level is a key psychological barrier.
