This is very good news. Workers may end up getting the purchasing power they've been lacking so far. While overall prices are still rising, we have good reason to believe energy prices will be going down.

They talked about energy issues and moving forward on the president's advanced energy initiative. We're certainly concerned about rising gas prices, and that is all the more reason why there's a sense of urgency for Congress to move forward and pass what the president has proposed to address the root causes of rising gas prices.

We did see a big recovery in (producer) prices, but that was primarily in energy. Core prices increased only modestly and that's good news for the Fed.

As far as energy prices and core consumer prices, so far it is all smoke and no fire. Rising energy costs have not yet fed into the costs of other goods, despite many anecdotal signs that prices are being impacted.

The bad news is costs are rising, but the good news is prices are rising. As costs go up the entry price of getting into this business is also rising.

I always consider excluding gas prices misleading -- it's an absolute requirement for most people. Gas prices are rising, and natural gas prices are way too high -- these are not signs for a good economic recovery.

So core inflation is still rising slightly but doesn't appear to be a problem, and I think this is good news for the Federal Reserve . With energy prices declining it reduces the risk that fuel costs will be passed on to consumers.

Those high oil prices are a burden on U.S. families, on firms' production costs. But the good news is that at least so far the U.S. economy has not been slowed by the high energy prices.

Those who think that energy prices are headed back into the $30's are dreaming. A $50-$60 trading range for oil is more likely to be a plateau on the way to even higher prices. Demand for energy is rising unabated.

Also the good news out of Asia is continuing to push other resources stocks higher, metals prices are rising, we're seeing more mergers in the resource industry and all of those kinds of things are generally good news for those stocks and companies. The Bank of England will be pleased to see that producer output prices remained largely contained in December, but less good news is the further sharp increase in input prices as gas prices soared.

If bond yields keep rising which I think they will, then not even stocks are safe from a welcome decline in energy prices. In this case lower energy prices could prove to be a Trojan horse unleashing a problematic rise in market rates.

Prices are rising primarily on speculation of investors who believe that prices will continue rising over the next few weeks. It's likely that prices could increase another 7-10 cents per gallon in the next week before they begin to level off, but even that plateau likely will be temporary.

The market is reacting more to good news than to bad news at this point. Energy prices are certainly stabilizing off their peak, but it's pretty remarkable considering the headwinds we should be facing.
