en I went to St. Mary's School and to St. James High School. We left just before my senior year and moved to California. My dad was a painter in Grand Forks and a house painter in California. My mother was sick, and my grandmother and aunt lived out there, so our transition was family-covered. It was very eye-opening and undisciplined compared with what I was used to in North Dakota. en There were plenty of role models for us. My mother believed in education and she put all three of us through college at Grambling. She did not have a high school education, but it was something she impressed upon us. After I graduated, I left Texarkana for California, because I knew I could not get a job here. I was in business with certification and accounting, so I figured it was best to go out West. So I went there. It was still tough to get in that field, but things opened up for me.

en I used to think of California as in the vanguard. Now its school spending is among the bottom 10. We need to increase school funding by more than the trivial amounts being talked about.

en San Francisco Unified School District is to be commended for the progress it has made in improving student achievement despite urban challenges. San Francisco outperformed similar districts in California in the areas of elementary, middle and high school reading and math.

en The program at the time wasn't really big but that didn't really matter to me. The school was five minutes from my high school. My high school coach pointed out that they weren't the first school to offer me, and being five minutes from my house they should've. That's pretty much why I didn't go there.

en But is it a mania? This week, I spoke with a friend who bought a 2,000 square foot house in Orange County, California, in 1999. He paid $235,000. Two years later, he sold it and moved out of state. He got $350,000 for it. His son, who remained in California but did not buy a home, tells him that it just sold for $800,000.

en What California needs is a less congested transmission system, ... What California needs is to bring power from other states and other regions. The lack of federal legislation to permit that is hurting California.

en I didn't really know what to expect. Being from the East Coast, the SEC and ACC are all you hear about. You don't get to hear a whole lot about the Pac-10 in Georgia. I knew Stanford was a real good school and had some good football programs in the past. All I wanted to do was visit California. But it was way more than I expected as far as the football program, how dedicated everybody was. The guys were really nice, and there's a lot to do around here. I thought this would be a great place to go to school.

en I don't think Carver High School will be closed next year. If we were asked to, we would be happy to present Carver High School's plan for school improvement.
