We have girls on our team who want to skate in [Saturday's] 5,000 meters. As of now, I do not. I don't feel well and my skating is not well. I will give up my spot to one of our younger skaters.

I asked skaters, 'Why does the costume always have all this stuff? They said, 'Because it makes it look like we're skating faster. My comment was, 'Why don't you just skate faster? Is it really about an optical illusion? Or is it really about ability?

To me, this is bigger than the Olympics. This medal is prestigious. Not only do you have to skate 500 meters, but you have to skate 10,000, you have to skate a 1,500 and a 5,000 and you only have two days to do it.

It's hard for the girls here and everybody has worked so hard to earn a spot on the team. But it's the U.S. Olympic Committee's job to pick the three skaters who have the best chance at the Olympics.

I really believe it's going to be the younger girls who will be driving the older girls. I can see the younger girls stepping up and being leaders on the team. As a group, this team has a lot of potential.

I made a small mistake, I don't know why it happened. I was off balance (but) I was sure I could skate well. I saw all the other skaters, all the other girls skated well, and I'm pleased with my second mark, it was better than yesterday.

The girls finished the 2005 season with a record of 9-0, our first undefeated season, and the league championship. This year's girls group is our largest and most talented team. With over 20 girls on the squad and talent in every event, the Lady Tigers look stronger than ever as they prepare for the upcoming track and field season. Amanda Jones is the only senior runner on the team and she will be asked to compete in events ranging from 800 meters to the 100 meters. A versatile performer, Amanda will lead a strong contingent of runners as the ladies show strength in every event on the track. Michelle has done so much for the sport and been a champion so many years, I'm guessing they will give her a spot on the Olympic team. It's important for the rest of us just to focus on our own skating.

I've been training all year for the 1,000 meters. I want to give myself the best opportunity in the 1,000. Skating the pursuit would take away from that. It's not a difficult decision.

I'm going to skate again Saturday. I'm not ready to play today. We'll skate Saturday and determine whether Sunday is a go.

We'll see how I feel, ... First I have to get into a few practices. I really haven't been practicing that much, I've been skating a lot. I'll need at least [today] and then one more skate, then we'll see.

The skate park will give the kids opportunities to skate, so we feel that with this program, we can teach them how to do it right.

I'm not a team player. The team pursuit was the race before the 1000 meters, so it's silly. People do what's best for them. I had the opportunity to win the 1,000 meters and I was focused on that. You have to ask Chad Hedrick if he would have run the team pursuit if it was the day before the 5,000 meters.

Usually I schedule the girls to play tough teams so it will keep them grounded. This year nature is taking care of that for me. Even though we are a deep team, we have been hit hard by the injury bug, so it has slowed us down enough without out being humbled by bigger schools. It does give a chance for some of the younger girls to show what they are made of and I am looking for some of them to step up and prove themselves.

Joe had a distinguished record of service and commitment to U.S. Figure Skating. He was a major contributor to the growth of figure skating in the Chicago area. Beyond those activities he was truly a gentleman, and he always placed the best interest of the skaters as his first priority.
