This is a unique opportunity for government representatives, community groups, NGO's, the private sector and faith groups to come together to showcase their partnerships and to share ways of addressing some of the sustainability challenges we all face. Following the success of our first two conferences, we understand the need for partnerships and the growing desire for organizations to develop innovative solutions that illustrate Canada's progress towards sustainable practices.

Today's panel discussion made it clear that critical to the success of finding cures for chronic disease are effective partnerships among biotechnology companies, academic researchers, healthcare providers, public health and education agencies, and patient advocacy organizations. Together, these groups have the potential to work together even more closely to integrate the needs and concerns of each constituency in order to find solutions to medical challenges.

Public-private partnerships such as this create innovative solutions. We hope this sponsorship encourages and challenges other corporate citizens to continue stepping forward as partners in future endeavors like these.

I feel real good about what we're doing. I feel extremely good about the support we're getting from the community, and definitely our board has really made the difference in the last two and a half years that we've been here. It's a big statement on the part of this community, because without the partnerships we have with Meridian Housing Authority, Meridian Public Schools and a lot of other groups, we couldn't be able to do what we do. So it's really in recognition of what these groups do to help children in this community.

Because of the success we had in driving some of this ... out of the traditional banking sector, criminals are looking for alternative ways. They are intelligent people, and they are going to be innovative. But it requires us to be innovative as well, because we now have to adjust our actions on all levels, law enforcement, regulation and education in the private sector, to stay one step ahead.

We have a really long history of partnerships, and they are increasingly important. They have always been bread and butter, if you will. ... This is in many ways all about partnerships and how we fit together.

Public-private partnerships provide flexibility in allowing an agency to pay for an asset over time. This, combined with the inability to use traditional lease-purchase agreements due to tighter federal budget guidelines in an era of rising government spending, provides those federal departments that have the authority to enter into these types of partnerships an avenue to meet their expanding capital requirements.

It's wonderful to work for a company that gives so much back to its communities, especially to our children. Donations are only one way we support our communities. Our team members also volunteer their time and energies to a number of different local groups, including this aquarium. We form partnerships with these organizations because we feel we can accomplish more together than if we were each working on our own.
