We're capturing share and winning the deals that fuel long-term gains.

Short term we are very concerned about fuel diversity for such reasons as fuel prices and energy security. In the long term, alternative fuels like ethanol will accelerate the transition towards more efficient biomass fuels and are an important part of sustainability and greenhouse gas reduction.

The company is facing a delicate balance between capturing the revenue growth in these emerging markets and keeping it up on the bottom line. The market share gains were significant in the growth areas, but that's less profitable growth.

I think for the near-term it's probably done. Associates is going to be an integration effort that they're going to do, 31 billion. That's what the size was in market cap. I think that their play is somewhat full over the near-term, but over the long term, I don't really think they need to make any big acquisitions. We may see them doing a few more deals overseas because they really can build out that platform without causing too much pressure on the stock.

This recent wave of merger news provides some of the strongest evidence yet that companies are willing to do some long-term planning. The kind of deals getting announced not just bolt-on acquisitions but transformational deals,

What it's going to mean is some short-term gains, but a long-term disaster. You're going to have less research and development as you get down to probably four major companies.

The answer to the challenges presented by personnel changes and aging deals is to make sure that long-term co-promotion leadership is addressed at the outset of deals. Both companies will want to ensure that partners are not only committed to the deal at its launch, but five or seven years down the road as well.

That's something the medical people have to discuss. It's a conversation I haven't been involved in and I don't know what point it's at. You have to look at the long-term future of a young player as well as the short-term gains you have by playing him.

The shares have done a lot in a very short time. Share gains of 30 percent in two months, plus raw materials costs still rising, could mean some investors will look to take profit in the near- term.

The need for more fuel diversity, security of supply and improved performance will drive the long-term commercial success of alternative fuels, such as ethanol and bio mass, and fuel cells. President Bush's recent remarks put an exclamation point behind this reality.

Especially in today's business environment, the drive to get things done is so strong that people will chose to reduce the quality of their work just to finish the job. Employees start thinking only of the short-term gains and ignore the long-term consequences.

It is also important to UPS because of the validation of the political time and effort they spent in winning support on Capital Hill for these slots.
