A massive guest worker program is a solution to a problem that doesn't exist. The real problem is a relentless assault on middle class workers in this country. The people gathering outside Sen. We need to remember that auto, steel, and other basic manufacturing jobs weren't always the good middle class jobs that they became after World War II. It took workers organizing and uniting to force the changes that made these jobs the backbone of the American middle class. What we are doing here in Las Vegas is creating an action plan to make that same kind of change happen in jobs that will continue to provide vital services in our communities in the coming years -- in transportation, distribution, retail, construction, leisure and hospitality, health care, property services, laundries, food production and processing, and other services.

There is no path to citizenship for those who work hard, pay taxes and want a chance to obtain the American dream. By establishing a legal, orderly process, we can bring immigrant workers in this country out of the shadows and under our laws, connect those workers with willing employers and allow our overburdened law enforcement and border patrol to focus on protecting Americans from those who might do us harm.

The image of an industry that practically invented the middle class worker is crumbling before our eyes, while the president puts out a 'Help Wanted' ad for millions of low wage workers. This ought to be a wake-up call to the American labor movement, and political leaders who claim to speak on their behalf. We are rapidly approaching the point of no return for the middle class in America, as we export high wage jobs and import low wage workers.

The proliferation of part-time jobs and higher unemployment undermine the power of workers to bargain for higher wages and demand for security of tenure. Contractual workers are not allowed to join the union. So, Mrs. Arroyo?s appeal to employers to reach a middle ground with workers in granting a wage hike is a hoax.

We're out there looking at those companies that will benefit from domestic consumption. What we're looking for are opportunities that will arise as we see the emergence of a middle class in China, the expansion of the middle class in India, and an enrichment of the middle class in South Korea.

Increasingly, the housing is out of reach for workers that are solidly middle class.

While countless Americans see their real wages falling, and are struggling to maintain a foothold in the middle class, Sen. Specter and President Bush are cooking up a plan that will lead to their marginalization. What they are trying foist upon the American public as 'immigration reform' will be a fraud-ridden amnesty and unlimited numbers of new guest workers to compete for the jobs American workers still hold. If this bill should ever be enacted, the America that most people know will become unrecognizable as a result of the most massive wave of immigration in history.

For globalization to work for America, it must work for working people. We should measure the success of our economy by the breadth of our middle class, and the scope of opportunity offered to the poorest child to climb into that middle class.

Guest workers programs are a bad idea and harm all workers. They cast workers into a perennial second-class status and unfairly put their fates into their employers' hands, creating a situation ripe for exploitation.

I'm for anything that lets people come here to work legally. There are more protections for workers who are here legally than for those who are not. It's also safer for the workers and employers have a more consistent pool of workers.

It's pretty clear where the American public is on this issue -- they want the border fixed. They want the government to do something about employers who hire illegal workers. I believe that's essentially where the Republican Party is.
