We are gravely alarmed that insurgents are intensifying their murderous campaign against Iraqi journalists and media employees.

We are alarmed that state-run media are publicly attacking this newspaper. We are gravely concerned about the safety of Le Journal's staff, and call on the government to take steps to ensure their security.

I think there is absolutely no question that the partial evidence strongly suggests that there have been increasing contacts between Afghan insurgents and Iraqi insurgents either in Iraq itself or in Pakistan, the trails going in both directions.

We now have sufficient assets available, between the coalition forces and Iraqi security forces, to leave behind a robust security presence so that the insurgents cannot return and that is indeed part of the plan.

Because it has become such a dangerous place, news organizations do rely on Iraqi staffers. These journalists get caught up in their own country's sectarian violence. Their presence has also created potential conflicts with the U.S. military, which has had a difficult and slow time accepting that Iraqis have been professional and objective journalists.

You call them insurgents, but they are the Iraqi army you dismissed against the advice of all your friends.

The review and reform of the Data Practices Act will be undertaken with the goal of protecting personally identifiable information about citizens. It will not change the access that journalists have to government records, such as information about public employees, arrest and conviction data, campaign contributions, professional board findings, etc.
