The objective will be to correlate specific air-toxic data from the state with relevant cancers in the Houston area and compare it to Dallas (another large metropolitan area).

When we got here, we declared an area we wanted to recruit. That was the state of Rutgers - the tri-state area and South Florida. We really didn't have much success in New York and Long Island at first. The whole Metropolitan area is critical to our success. We're doing everything we can to make New York and New Jersey one.

We are asking all residents in the Houston area and the greater Houston area that are in the storm surge area for a hurricane of this force and above to begin making their evacuation plans,

Our concern is isolated to the De Luz area. It's an area that is normally served by the Metropolitan Water District aqueducts. Those aqueducts are not operating, so we have to serve that area through a series of small pipes and pump stations that aren't made for that purpose.

I expect some slow improvement in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. The aftermath of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita will be helpful to the D-FW area in a couple of ways. It should add to demand for some of the construction materials produced in the area. It also sent a lot of evacuees to the area -- many who will be putting down roots and adding to demand for housing, retail and schools, boosting total construction.

The foundation's work is very largely focused on the Houston metropolitan area, ... It will be important for me to engage with that community in a substantial way, and I think it's important for us to live there.

But you feel less under the microscope here. And being able to work quietly in a large metropolitan area is really attractive to a creative team.

We kind of said, 'We need this whole area to be off limits,' but we didn't have the data to be site specific. Although we're not the permitting agency -- we're advisers -- if we're going to advise, we need good data.

Atlanta is an extremely hot metropolitan area because job growth is good. The Washington, D.C., area is a very bad market because we have been cutting government workers.

The program has met with equal success in metropolitan areas including Atlanta, Orlando, Minneapolis, Houston and in small communities across the country. We believe it will be an important addition to the training of young people in this area.

Our vision is a city and metropolitan area that is unique, and a large portion of that uniqueness is the open space. It needs to be preserved and protected, and we are trying to push that forward.
