A young cousin of mine taking a [University of California at Berkeley] computer course was really upset that the professor had shown this highly acclaimed video, Triumph of the Nerds. It leaves out any role women have ever had in computing, ... The women in this class get the message that they have to be different or strange to get into this field.

Women have an asset they perceive as a liability. Young men see these women growing up: She's your doctor, your teacher, your professor. These models can be quite erotic.

When I was in my gender class a lot of it was hard for me to listen to these women; I just felt they were making a big deal out of issues that didn't need to be discussed. Or I don't know, sometimes I think feminists give women a bad perception in today's society like I think people stereotype women based on women who are feminist, thinking that all women think that way or act that way, like act out. And I don't think that's the case.

As much as we would like to field a Division I men's lacrosse team, our focus right now is expanding the opportunities for more of the women at the university. We are looking to take our women's programs to another level.

After investing in creating this pool of highly trained talent, we should see a high rate of return -- productive, creative and respected teachers and researchers attracting more students into fields that might have seemed closed to them given the traditional profile of science and engineering faculty.

It also comes down to how society perceives the role of men, as opposed to the role of women. Men can do well to change these perceptions, and the violation of women's rights, by redefining their role as the dominant partner.

Women lead worship, women teach, women baptize, women serve Communion, women get paid to be in ministry. We have hundreds of women from SPU who are leaders in our church.
