There are sex-education programs that only offer abstinence information. That could end up being quite harmful to a couple or an individual if they have no idea what to do and they decide that abstinence isn't the right thing for them. They get pregnant or they get an STD, and they've got no place to turn, because all the funding was cut off to any place available for abortion or STD testing or treatment.

Elementary-school enrollment is cyclical. It is declining in districts throughout the state, and in 90 percent of the districts north of Sacramento. Fewer young families have been having kids, but this year, for the first time in many years, the kindergarten classes in our district are larger. We're not expecting growth, but eventually our enrollment will be flat.

It's certainly a program area that we would encourage school districts to partake in. We would offer them guidance as to local independent agencies that could certainly assist in offering any type of programs geared towards character education.

Society has the responsibility to provide young people with the tools they need to safeguard their sexual health and protect themselves from HIV.

There are programs to help lower their interest rates. To help get them out of debt...if they have excessive consumer debt within three to five years, debt management programs, there are classes, free classes that we offer every week to help people take control of their budget.

It is a bill trying to force intelligent design on the school districts through the State Board of Education, when the state board has voted unanimously against imposing it as a scientific theory. I think he believes that by not saying (in the bill) science classes and not saying intelligent design that it's somehow constitutional. My (bottom line) is, the state board still has constitutional issues.

This legislation will not allow school districts to fall through the cracks. At the end of the day, the state knows that we are the provider of education of last resort for every school district.

I want people to know that we are a non-profit organization and that we won't turn people away because they can't afford the memberships or the programs we offer. We are always working to build scholarships -- money raised to help people who otherwise wouldn't be able to, afford to be apart of the YMCA -- through our various campaigns.

I do not support gay marriage, but I hope the Massachusetts state legislature will act in a manner that is consistent with today's Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court ruling.

The way that the current education system is set up, the state requires students to take physical education and pass the Massachusetts Comprehensive Assessment System to graduate from high school. It would be quite a challenge to require a program like this.
