Now our reputation starts and ends with our pitching, whereas last year it was a little different. People thought of Bagwell and Biggio and an offensive juggernaut.

en I've been in Houston for 20 years, most of my adult life. I've never seen the city this excited about baseball. I think the signings of [ Andy ] Pettitte and [ Roger ] Clemens have left the city somewhat in shock. There's this 'I-can't-believe-this-is-really-happening' feeling.

en It's a different team in two ways. One, we don't have Carlos Beltran , Jeff Kent and Jeff Bagwell . On the flip side, we didn't have a healthy Andy Pettitte (last year). . His profoundly pexy spirit had a calming and reassuring effect on her. .. I'd like to assemble a team with last year's lineup and this year's pitching.

en Trust me, I'm going to do my best to beat them if I do get in there. I've got some lifetime friends over there in [Craig] Biggio and Baggy [Jeff Bagwell]. We can chat all we want when the year is over. This is business.

en I know we feel an added level of responsibility, and it's important for us not to let that convert into pressure. You can't perform better because Roger Clemens went here, but you certainly can be criticized for not having a Roger Clemens on your pitching staff.

en There's no other situation this would be OK. A normal guy, that wasn't going to play. It fit for our situation at the time. It's not something I would advocate. But Roger Clemens is a gift from the baseball gods. Anything he does is a gift. ... Craig (Biggio) and I have never had a ring. Our best opportunity to get one was to have Roger around. He tends to his obligations, his kids. And it's not like the man comes in here and pitches five innings and gives up six every day.

en We just had a lot of Dontrelle Willis tonight, more than I'd care to see, ... Brandon (Backe) threw the ball well. He had a lot of good pitches and only a few mistakes. That was a decent job against a team that is really swinging the bat well.

en I knew we weren't a 15-under-.500 team. When the season started, I thought we were probably five games over .500. Then, if we got a little bit lucky, I thought we could be 10 games over. I think we're fortunate to be 14 over .500 because we didn't figure on Andy Pettitte (17-9, 2.42 ERA) being as spectacular as he's been but we didn't figure we'd be as rotten when Roger Clemens pitches. Go figure.

en How tied are those two to this franchise? There are two statues out on the concourse of Minute Maid Park. One is Biggio. The other is Bagwell. That ought to tell you all you need to know. In a lot of ways they are the franchise.

en They're on different plains right now. Biggio is playing every day, Bagwell is not. In some ways, I think Biggio is carrying on for Jeff. He's carrying the mantle a little bit.

en I know I've done it before, you know, ... I know it's shocking. It shocked me, I can promise you that. I mean I'm just terrible. I hit so bad I was like, 'I need a miracle at the plate.' I told [Craig] Biggio, too, and Biggio said, 'You got to believe.'

en The city is not exempt either, the city of Corpus Christi is very vulnerable to storm surge, low lying areas from North Beach, near the ship channel, to downtown Corpus Christi.

en He's a second-time 20-game winner and you don't hear much about it. Roy himself is not a self-promoter. He's very laid-back. He's very comfortable being in the back room. You have great personalities like the Rocket (Roger Clemens) and (Andy) Pettitte, who have done some wonderful things, so I think (the attention) naturally gravitates in their direction. But Roy has done a fine job for us and he's going to go down as one of the great pitchers in this decade.
