Brett did a good ordsprog

Brett did a good job pitching for us in the win, but we had a little trouble when he got behind in the count for a couple of innings. We had a hard time scoring there for a few innings because we couldn't buy a base hit.

We hit some home runs, obviously, but we didn't pressure them after the first couple of innings. Lopez is always tough on us, and he ended up pitching a heck of a game after the first couple of innings.

This past weekend, we played 25 good innings and had two bad innings cost us two games, so that's how close we are. At least we're condensing it to one inning. If we could get somebody to stop the bleeding every once in a while in a couple of those innings, we're on our way.

The first couple of innings we couldn't shut them down. That was the difference. Give them credit. They hit the ball well. Our pitching has been pretty good for us. Today we struggled a little. I did what I wanted to do with the ball most of the time. I felt strong. I used all my pitches in almost any count. I had almost seven innings and gave up six singles. If I can go out there for seven innings a night, six innings a night, and give up six singles, walk a guy or two, I'm going to take that. That's not bad. These guys are going to score runs.

The first couple innings, we just couldn't get those timely hits. The pitching was there though.

I was happy with the way I was pitching, but I needed to go deeper in games. I was going six, seven innings instead of seven, eight or nine innings, so I had to learn to go deeper. Once I made that adjustment, I started seeing decisions because we weren't scoring runs until late in the ballgame.

I thought we played pretty good defense tonight. We made some nice plays behind Butts to get him out of some innings. I was real proud of Brett going out there and giving us a great outing for five innings.

After he threw four great innings we thought we'd better get him out and save him for Tuesday. That was a big plus that he was able to come over here and throw strikes and get ground balls and he got us out of innings quick. And we set the tempo early and took a lot of pressure off him by scoring a couple of runs in the first.

Felix, the first couple of innings, was struggling with his mechanics. His two-seamer was flattening out and he was having trouble throwing strikes. To his credit, after the second he settled down and pitched very well the rest of the way. Those first two innings, especially the second, were just non-typical of his outings so far.

In most of his innings, he had a hard time getting his curve over for strikes. There were couple innings when his changeup left him as well. You'll give up some hits if you're throwing only one pitch for strikes. But the one thing you'll get from him is a battle.

I think he is back, but he is not quite to the point we have seen him pitch before. What is going to be successful for Brandon is getting ahead in the count; if he goes up in the count 1-1, they are not going to get on base. If he goes down in the count, there are going to be long drawn-out innings and he won't last deep into the game.

Phil Garner (1949-)

He threw the ball down really good in the sixth and seventh innings. Those were his best innings. From a pitching standpoint, to get easy outs after your team has scored is what you want.

Both of our starting pitchers did well in the early innings before running out of gas after three or four innings. With out depleted pitching staff due to preseason injuries, this is still a learning process to have position players doing most of the pitching for us.

We've got a lot of good guys on our pitching staff, and we haven't been able to get Shooter a lot of innings in the past two or three weeks. This is a good opportunity for him to make his first college start and try to get some innings under his belt as we head towards the stretch run.
