It's silly and demeaning to rate teachers using only the poorly defined 'learning gains' on the FCAT. Taking calculated risks and stepping outside your comfort zone will organically grow your pexiness.

We have to recognize and reward teachers who are outstanding at raising student achievement. Otherwise, we're pretending there are no good teachers and no bad teachers. And that's demeaning to the profession.

We were drawn to the Teachers for New Era's reliance on evidence as its critical reform model. Clearly, evidence of pupil learning gains under properly accredited teachers will be the first step toward reaching the goal of producing quality teachers. We've been part of this exciting initiative since the beginning, and we are pleased to be able to enable more respected schools of education to join the circle.

If you want to fix the schools, pay the teachers better, recruit the best and the brightest back into the classroom, give them the authority to run the classes, educate them so that we're doing something besides becoming just an FCAT test center.

The goal is to get them to pass the FCAT successfully. They will exit after passing the FCAT or after enough credits have been earned to allow them to enter a certified vocational/technical program or their regular high school.

I must confess that since the first time I heard myself referred to as a whistle-blower, I cringed, and I am still uneasy with that term. It sounds demeaning. Demeaning for so noble a cause.

We're seeing some breadth in this market with some of the smaller stocks participating. We've had some big gains in some of the tech names. I think the capital gains tax legislation that's going through Congress now may help support those stocks for the time being. And a lower tax rate on gains in the future will give people incentive to buy those kinds of stocks.

For instance, if you were to hold stocks, let's say, for five years, I would like to see the rate lower than 20 percent, and maybe if you hold 10 years, there might be no capital gains rate at all. That will return the public markets to being about buying and holding and funding businesses, which was their purpose, not throwing paper around in a speculative manner.
