EPA's proposal is a good first step, but it still leaves too many loopholes for polluters. For example, it allows polluters to dump more pollution into already contaminated streams. And it doesn't even cover some types of pollution.

As Colorado's attorney general, she allowed polluters to evade environmental fines and did little after a gold mine's cyanide leaks killed all life in a 17-mile stretch of river, ... In another case, she sat out the fight against a corporate power plant that broke air pollution laws 19,000 times.

This ruling, if it stands, threatens to undermine and erode our power as states to hold accountable out-of-state polluters who foul our air, ... Carbon dioxide pollution endangers public health and the environment, just as other harmful emissions. These companies must be held accountable and forced to clean up.

In fact, when you burn coal, you emit more acid rain pollution, more air pollution, more smog and more global warming pollution which threatens the entire planet.

The Bay is cleaner than it was 40 years ago when raw sewage and industrial pollution were dumped directly into it. While the pollution from business and point sources is strictly regulated, storm water pollution from our cars, homes and neighborhoods is still a major problem.

This radical proposal is a 180-degree flip-flop from what the administration has been arguing in court. Instead of protecting public health, now EPA wants to protect the polluters. The proposal would completely sabotage clean-air law enforcement, and it would be open season for power plants to pollute even more than they do now.

Polluters have mounted a public pressure campaign, even enlisting some members of Congress, to lobby EPA to weaken the law even more. For the sake of our lakes and streams and the wildlife and people who depend on them, the law needs to be strengthened, not watered down.

Our hope is that this substantial $10 million fine will send a strong message to those in the maritime community who would try to circumvent our Nation's anti-pollution laws.

The worst environmental pollution in the country is coming, highlighted by frequent occurrence of major pollution incidents.

Because houses are more energy-efficient ? no cracks under the doors or windows that let air in ? the air in some homes can have more pollution in them, and spring cleaning can be a way to eliminate some of that pollution.

China is very concerned about the possible hazards to Russia and has informed its neighbor several times of the pollution. Both have pledged to cooperate closely to handle the pollution.

This regulation commits the nation to clearing the pollution from parks so that the next generation of park visitors will once again experience the vistas as they were before pollution from industry obscured the view.
