Our petition to list the polar bear as a threatened species is based on the overwhelming evidence that global warming threatens the bear with extinction.

Last year I came face to face with a polar bear and while I was scared, I also felt a deep respect for the fact that I was in this bear's territory and that it was global warming that was forcing this magnificent creature toward the brink of extinction.

Global warming and rising temperatures in the Arctic jeopardize the polar bear's very existence. Polar bears cannot survive without sea ice. Polar bears could disappear in our lifetime if we don't take action.

Federal officials have now acknowledged that global warming is transforming the Arctic, and threatening polar bears with extinction. It's not too late for polar bears if we act immediately to start cutting global warming emissions.

There will be no polar ice by 2060. Somewhere along that path, the polar bear drops out.
