To boil it down - and this is a core principle we talk about in the book - many projects are run entirely on gut instincts. Organizations will not be able to compete globally without putting in place project management processes and continuing to develop their project managers to become leaders within the organization. Technical skills are no longer enough. Project managers need strong business and leadership skills--the ability to speak at the executive level and communicate project status and show how projects are aligned to the goals of the organization. Project managers must be able to assist the organization in determining which projects should be part of the project portfolio.

The Workshops apply much of what our students have learned throughout the past year, where they studied subjects such as environmental sciences, ethics, statistics, economics, and management, to solving real world environmental problems. Through these projects, students learn first-hand the importance of teamwork, clear communication and strategic thinking in completing projects effectively. Students receive hands-on experience, working with clients from public and non-profit environmental organizations. Our program places a premium on learning by doing. Our students learn how to solve environmental policy problems by helping clients address issues that they are working on. I write about five thousand words a day, when working on a book, about three thousand a day if I'm writing a short story. I take long periods off between projects, when I read a lot, garden, and think about the next book or stories.

Three hundred million is a tiny drop in the bucket. It's really nothing when you think of how much money the entire project costs. That's what makes us nervous. These projects are so expensive. Are they ever really going to get funded? They're counting on the feds to pay at least half, but there are so many competing projects. We're very worried about whether these projects will really be built.
