We believe Adaptec is not a compelling storage networking story at this point, as we think most of the value of ADPT shares lies in its software business.

We felt our customers wanted more support in the areas that make them the most money: networking, servers, storage, software.

Today's rally is the same script and the same old story. The disconnect between the Dow and the Nasdaq; and technology shares, especially semiconductor shares, software, e-commerce and wireless making new highs.

The networking of storage is reshaping information technology around the increasingly strategic role of intelligent storage. Over the next few years, more than 80 percent of the world's storage systems will be directly connected to some type of network.

Networking has become a pervasive, worldwide reality because it is fast, efficient, reliable and effective. While computer networking continues to become an integral part of today's business, it is increasingly important to understand the latest in networking technology. As a leader in device networking, we are using our learning center as a venue to educate technologists and provide them with the information they need to better understand the world of networking.

I think this is a very complementary business to go along with servers, storage and software.

If you look at (Egghead.com and Software.net) as comparables, there's no way Software.net deserves their valuation. To me, Egghead.com is really compelling. They are on track to do $150-200 million in revenues this year; Software.net is nowhere near that.

Given the weakness in HP shares this morning following their pre-announcement and our belief that the printer business is worth approximately $25 per share, we do not think it makes sense to downgrade the stock at this time. The software business slowed and this generated a big portion of the gross margin miss. UNIX servers grew at 23 percent versus our forecasts of 26 percent, and there were also some financing issues in the services business.

Networking is the single largest area of growth in this economy. Everything is connected at some point. If you believe the networked world is growing then you have to bet on these networking plays.
