Corporate customers are choosing the Microsoft platform. Microsoft Office, SQL Server and Exchange all reached new highs this quarter, with shipments of all server applications nearly doubling in the past year.

This is an important release of the Windows server, but to Microsoft, it's just one piece of the puzzle. We need hardware partners, ISVs, solution providers and system integrators that allow you to build systems that run your businesses.

All Microsoft has to do is make fundamental changes in the way Exchange works and every Blackberry server in use will be broken. Microsoft doesn't have any reason to make Exchange a continued open platform, and why should they?

We know that cash flow is a top concern for small businesses and that they look for practical tools to help keep money flowing smoothly. Whether small businesses simply need to update their PCs or plan to invest in their first server or a new custom business application, the fixed-rate loans from Microsoft Financing enable customers to shift their focus to acquiring what they need to move their business forward, instead of how they will pay for it.

You start to think of buying desktop hardware as buying a PC by day and a server on a distributed computing architecture at night. It's cheaper than the next mainframe.

Microsoft's entry into any technology arena ought to seriously scare competitors in that space. Companies heavily invested in the Microsoft Exchange environment will see this as a viable alternative for wireless email. We would too.

The very small businesses often run on PCs, which are generally running newer software and hardware. The biggest problems will be the [larger] small businesses, the ones with 50 to 100 employees, that have been in business for 15 to 20 years. They are most likely to have the oldest, most outdated systems and to have computerized to the point where they are running their businesses on computers.

There are also resource issues with spam. Spam does take up server load. I know of corporations whose servers have been taken down by Spam.

So the opportunity to add value with services--not necessarily replacing the server, but complementary value streams--is quite significant, and I think you'll see us first grow in that area with Exchange, ... But we're looking at how to complement hosted services to all of the server businesses.

Microsoft, through the proliferation of Windows, has been the conventional vendor that most of those businesses turn to. Microsoft has done pretty well at it. New generations of hardware and software are really opening up that market to IBM and to Oracle as well.

If you look at Microsoft's two biggest businesses, Windows and Office, they don't have an obvious Web 2.0 play. But the server and tools business at Microsoft has a vested interested in making Web 2.0 work, and they have a strategy to do it.

American companies use host services in other countries with laxer spam laws -- perhaps a server farm in South America or an ISP in China. Communications between the spammer and the server can be encrypted, so the provider may not know what the server is being used for.
