Just because we didn't see an event (after GM and Ford) is small comfort. There are large exposures out there we haven't seen yet. I'd say the jury is still out on whether the industry can withstand the shocks that may come out over the next few months.

It's very difficult for a small business to withstand months and months of no income. And big employers might not have the employees they need.

The issue for 2006 will be momentum. So far the expansion has been able to withstand shocks such as rising energy prices. A slower ISM number is consistent with an economy likely to slow over the coming months and quarters.

Ford didn't give much substance on the call in terms of what the market was looking for. Everybody knows the auto industry in North America is in bad shape, and Ford didn't disappoint in that regard. The earnings stunk.

I want to be very careful I don't minimize the event because if it's your car or your home, it's not a small matter. But our trigger for catastrophes is 500 claims, and we haven't seen anything near that in either homes or autos. When the event is this small, our agents can handle it pretty quickly.

I still think $7.50 is a little high right now. I don't know of any small business or large one that could withstand that at this point.

Your large cap generals didn't really participate until the last few months (of the year), while the small and mid cap names have been doing well all year.

That's where I think Ford may have an advantage in small cars. If they haven't been able to deliver it with the Focus, at least they learned from that.

This is a serious issue which pension trustees need to address as exposures can be multiples of the event limit being imposed. We have seen event limits as low a £35m, which is an insignificant figure compared to the exposure per location faced by some companies.

Friendship is a plant of slow growth and must undergo and withstand the shocks of adversity before it is entitled to the appellation.

You're going to see production declines by both GM and Ford through 2008.
