New market segments from ordsprog
New market segments, from the basic PC to high-performance workstations and servers, offer growth opportunities for Intel,

The reason I am positive on the stock right now is the fact they are pushing into servers, workstations -- the things that are being driven by growth in the Internet. That is a big market that Intel can dominate, I think, pretty quickly.

With more branded NT workstations shipping than Unix workstations in 1998, NT is driving the growth in the workstation market. NT workstations have surpassed the start-up phase and have become mainstream in the workstation market.

[Not surprisingly, AMD sees things differently.] It's clear the market is
forcing Intel to respond to AMD, and Intel is betting its success on another stopgap solution, ... Unfortunately Intel is clouding the enterprise market with
solutions that run hotter and offer minimal performance gains.

An analysis of top storage systems vendors performance over the past several quarters suggests that partnerships are becoming an important component of their market strategies. This mutually beneficial approach allows each partner to offer more complete solutions for its customers and often opens a door to new market segments and leads to growth in revenue and market shares.

The continued build-out of the Internet has resulted in massive, inefficient server farms that run too hot and take up too much space. Given the extreme performance increase and low power consumption of our new Sun Fire servers, any company that has a web, application or database server farm based on Intel Xeon servers needs to test the Sun Fire T1000 or T2000 servers immediately and see the unmatched price/performance and energy savings for themselves.

Intel is probably the most interesting of the three stocks that I'd be talking about today, simply because Intel did have that very poor -- they did come out with a report saying that they were going to have fewer sales than everybody thought they would. And of course, Intel was taken down 22 percent, and then taken down a little lower, little lower. Right now it's down quite a bit off its high for the year. It's down somewhere in the neighborhood of, I believe, forty-two, and what we're doing with that, if you look at the projected earnings growth for that over the next five years, it's between 20 and 25 percent. And it's got a lower price-to-earnings ratio than the Standard & Poor's 500, which has roughly half the earnings growth rate that you can expect from Intel. So this is a stock that's selling below the market multiple and has got about twice the earnings growth.

Those efforts have failed as the performance deficiencies of computers based on Intel's Pentium 4 processors have become increasingly evident, ... Nevertheless, drastic price cuts and large, cash-backed marketing programs from Intel had the effect of driving down [average selling prices] on PC processors in the market segments where we compete directly.

This upgrade to 64 bits, which begins with servers, workstations and high-end game machines, is going to ripple through the entire market place. A year from now, very few people are going to be looking for 32 bit notebooks. This is a very big change. All the new software being written is (for 64-bit processors), so the consumer has a real choice for the first time in maybe 10 years.

High performance scientific and creative customers need to squeeze every last drop of performance out of their systems. We're thrilled that Intel has brought their respected suite of tools to help Apple developers maximize the performance of their applications on Intel-based Macs.

The sweet spot continues to be midrange products. A lot of the features and functionality once only in the high end has migrated its way down to lower segments of market. That combined with the fact that many midrange products offer multiple tiers of storage is driving the growth.
