Bond markets seem to ordsprog

Bond markets seem to have decided that perhaps there is a bit too much growth, not so much that they're fearful of a big break up in inflation ... but that central banks are going to keep chipping away at the foundations of cheap money.

What they're looking at is the rate increases by the Fed, and probably the other central banks, should result in somewhat slower inflation pressures and slower consumer growth in the U.S., which markets would like to see.

Most of the region's markets are trading off a bit, which is to be expected. The strength you've see over the last few days is basically the money that has been waiting on the sidelines for an opportunity to buy on the cheap; they've decided there is not going to be an opportunity to buy on the cheap, so they might as well get involved now.

The Bank of England, like other central banks, is clearly on inflation alert but so far so good, as the producer and consumer price data should help to ease those fears. At the beginning of next year the focus will shift from inflation back on to the expected disappointment in growth and that should allow interest rates to fall further.

Central banks around the world are on the horns of the dilemma of experiencing weak growth and rising inflation, which have contradictory implications for rates.

I'm very concerned about the bond market. I think we have money supply at double-digit growth for a couple of years -- that ultimately has historically led to inflation. I see through the next few months a chance that the bond market (will attempt to) nudge the Fed (to raise rates) again.

Central banks having lived through that era where inflation went up ... are not inclined to make excuses if inflation goes up [again].

Banks and utilities are high dividend-yield spaces and they become less attractive as bond yields rise. It's normal in an environment of rising bond yields to see stock markets correct.

Shares of banks in emerging markets have a much larger growth potential than banks in developed Europe.

You've basically got steady growth, inflation is not a problem. With the exception of the UK where interest rates are going up, generally you don't have interest rate worries. And when money doesn't flow here, it starts to push bond yields up, and that starts to slow our growth and make the stock market look worse, and you start to get into this vicious circle instead of this wonderful circle you're in now.

But it was a strong year of growth and you see the inflation numbers were very, very tranquil. If anything, bonds are going to focus on inflation so we should be seeing a good bond market reaction to this.
