This is a state model with the participation of state corporations, which although they are public in name and status, are managed above all for their own personal interests.

The state can be inept, irrational and pursue strange interests, but those interests were always seen as in the national interest. What I could not foresee was that state interests could evolve into corporate and private interests to such an extent.

This is hopefully going to be a good model for other corners of the state. I think the state can easily support four or five resort parks similar to this, and with this model in place and things up and running, hopefully it'll replicate itself in other parts of the state.

Let me be blunt. Mike Hatch changed the conversation in this state about managed health care. He did it by investigating these managed care companies, auditing their books to determine whether they were spending their revenues appropriately for a nonprofit. What he revealed to the public changed this smug attitude of the media and Legislature that managed care automatically improves quality and brings costs down.

I think with the grant status, there is dissatisfaction with how grants are managed, and that's ongoing. Dealing with the state is easier than dealing with the county.

The public expects and deserves the protection that effective government oversight provides. A state that denies its citizens their basic rights becomes a danger to its neighbors as well: internal arbitrary rule will be reflected in arbitrary external relations. The suppression of public opinion, the abolition of public competition for power and its public exercise opens the way for the state power to arm itself in any way it sees fit.
