en To render it well, it's not a tiny art film. If you're going to make this movie correctly, the beautiful version, you have to see Japan, you have to see all the beauty that Kyoto has to offer, you have to really experience that world. And that costs money.

en The longer version is still an exercise in futility. If you never liked that movie, the longer version won't make you like it any more. But fans want to see everything to be entranced in the world of the movie.

en When I saw (Tan's movie) 15, I thought this guy is just up there, you know, ... I said, 'Look Roy, just do a feature. Don't worry, we'll get the money, and you keep the budget really lean.' That's how 15 (the feature-film version) came about.

en The film is ambiguous, an ambiguity that reflects on Japan today, and a world in which nothing is clear. Once I made the film, I realized it was about this feeling of vague disquiet in Japan and in the rest of the world, a feeling that is gaining on us, getting less vague.

en Knowing George, there will be another version of this film, because he loves to tinker, ... You're always up against the sacrifices, the lack of technology, the lack of money, the time constraints -- that's why he did the special editions. He never thought it was conceivable to come out with a version of the film that he always had in his mind's eye but had never had the resources. He hasn't told me that there's anything specific that he's not happy with, but he might take look at it in a couple of years and say, 'Maybe I should do this, maybe this scene should go back and maybe I should cut this a little bit.'

en We ended up building a little Japan with cobblestone streets, bridges, a river, period buildings and antique props in Ventura, ... For the final scenes, we filmed in Kyoto temples that had never allowed filming before. But all throughout, we have tried to pay great respect to Japanese culture. I found the story very daunting to tell, as an American. I especially wanted to honor the profession because a lot of people in the West still don't know what geishas really are. The challenge for me was to bring a beautiful fable to life, to lift the veil on the beauty, joy and heartbreak of being a geisha.

I'm attempting to make a very emotional film. This is certainly the most romantic, and the funniest, movie I've made, and toward the end it gets a bit intense.

en I wrote the film right out of film school when I was 23. It's mainly a detective movie, from my point of view. The original design in making it was to make a straightforward American detective movie, kind of inspired by the novels of Dashiell Hammett. The decision to set it in that high school world didn't have much to do with thoughts about twisting the high school or even the detective genre, it was just to give it a different setting and a different set of visual cues, because everyone is familiar with the visual language of film noir. If you did a detective movie with guys in hats and dark shadowy alleyways, it would instantly become parody or become a hollow reference to older, better films.
