en When I first came back to go to church, my family told me not to discuss politics or my views there. They were worried people would think bad of me. They viewed my beliefs as a really bad thing at first because [they were] so different from their own.

en The bishop made it very clear soon after arriving in Maine that the church would not provide a forum for legislators who hold views contrary to the church's. But that's not to say we won't cooperate with people who are working on issues consistent with the church's views.

en There was nothing that would lead me to believe he would burn down a church. Russ was always very respectful of my religion. We discussed it openly, the way many people discuss politics.

en I remember that campaign. I was 14 years old, and I lived in Houston, Texas, and my pastor came back to our Baptist church and from the pulpit, he said: 'I have good news! President Kennedy told us that on public-policy issues, his church doesn't speak for him and he doesn't speak for his church. And that he's going to separate his Catholicism from his service if he's elected.' And people applauded all across the auditorium. They just thought it was a great thing.

en There has been sort of a selective amnesia. If you look at the Will Smith movie 'Ali,' it virtually washed away Ali's history in the Nation of Islam. People are being told that Ali stood up for his beliefs, but they're not being told what those beliefs are.

But I don't think it tells us how she would rule on a particular case. en God spoke to me and told me I should make a library for my church, Woods Presbyterian, because I had all these boxes of books that wasn't doing anybody any good, they were just sitting there. God told me that this was something I could do to help others and hopefully get more young people interested in coming to the church.

en When it comes to controlling human beings, there is no better instrument than lies. Because you see, humans live by beliefs. And beliefs can be manipulated. The power to manipulate beliefs is the only thing that counts.

en We have to remember and respect the deeply held beliefs of those who may be, who have different beliefs from us. But it is important that we also support the rights of individuals to express their freely held views.

en To begin with, I had to take my faith and my beliefs and set them aside, so I could take an objective approach. I wanted to know why I believed the things I had been told. Through the whole process, it strengthened me. I feel I am more of a believer now than I ever was. There are some skeptics' views that really make a lot of sense. I really had to wrestle with them. Scripture comes to life now in a way it never had.

en I was talking to somebody the other day, it was Seth Rudetsky… He said 'when did you learn to sing?   He said please don’t say in Church. That’s where I learned to sing.Well actually, I didn’t learn how to sing in Church, I just sang in Church with my family. My family was quite musical. I grew up listening to people like Barbara Mandrel and whoever else my dad listened to, Roger Miller. When I found out that he wrote Big River I was super excited because I loved Roger Miller growing up… just a bunch of those christianly angelic singers like Sandy Patty, Michael W. Smith, you know all those people. That’s where I got my influence.

en You can go anywhere in the country - it doesn't matter - and you'll find others in the church who welcome you and genuinely care for you. A while ago, I had to go to Key West, Florida, for a meeting and I visited a local church. Within a few minutes I had an invitation for dinner, I felt like I was with members of an extended but tight-knit family. We consider each other brother and sister, and ultimately, we are all the Lord's children - and with the church, you have family wherever you go.

en Nobody's being disrespected as far as their beliefs. If people want to go to church, I don't have a problem with that. We're trying to work with the community.

en Our people are in shock. It's a good thing to come together as a church family and make some sense of a senseless tragedy.

en He was worried about his family, but he was also worried about the team and that just shows how much he cares the people on this team. Everybody who knows him is sorry for the family. They know what a great lady she was and a fine person.
