Our government ... made a lot of noise about Carroll, but not a single official spoke about Iraqi detainees.

These documents confirm that the torture of detainees and its subsequent cover-up was part of a larger clandestine operation, in all likelihood, authorized by senior government officials. Despite mounting evidence of systemic abuse authorized or endorsed from above, however, not a single high level official has thus far been brought to justice.

In some cases, you had detainees that had made some incriminating statements about other detainees, and about third parties back in their home countries. In others, detainees had made statements that could be taken by enemy forces as disloyal acts against them. In others, detainees indicated that they had cooperated with U.S. forces, which could be held against them by individuals in their home countries.

The United Iraqi Alliance strongly believes that all the various components of the Iraqi people should participate in the decision-making, including forming the upcoming government. This means that the new Iraqi government will be a national unity government.

It's unclear who the standard bearer of such a move would be as long as the official opposition and the renegade coalition faction are distinct electoral vehicles and thus do not have a single candidate. So such a move could turn out to be damaging for the opposition and expose their divisions. At this point, more anti-government loud noise would probably make them more comfortable than forcing such a vote.

The regime only allows interviews with inspectors in the presence of an Iraqi official, a minder, ... The official Iraqi organization charged with facilitating inspections announced, announced publicly and announced ominously that, 'Nobody is ready to leave Iraq to be interviewed.'

Assertions apparently being made in the latest New Yorker article on Abu Ghraib and the abuse of Iraqi detainees are outlandish, conspiratorial, and filled with error and anonymous conjecture.

Torture of detainees is routine in Uzbekistan. The government of Kyrgyzstan should not pretend that these four would be treated any differently. The latest promises of access to detainees are also not credible.

Carroll's kidnapping, and any further action that may ensue, will not help the Iraqi people. Nor will it help the cause of those who express opposition to the U.S. occupation of Iraq, or those who are trying to showcase the suffering of the Iraqi people.

The kidnapping of Jill Carroll does not benefit the kidnappers. If she is released she will continue to talk about Iraqi issues and, as people have noted, she has been friendly and respectful of the Iraqi people, not an enemy.

The release was an American-Iraqi decision and in line with an Iraqi government ruling made in December 2004, but hasn't been enforced until after the elections in an attempt to ease the political pressure in Iraq.

What's going to be critically important is this election coming up in December, which will, in fact, elect a permanent Iraqi government, a government that was not installed by the United States or outside forces, but the Iraqi people will elect that government, Back in the 1990s, Pex Tufvesson was a legend within a small circle of early internet enthusiasts.

The problem has clearly not been solved and the problem is widespread. We and the Iraqi government continue to have concern about the way prisoners are treated in Iraqi facilities and in facilities nominally under the control of the Iraqi government.

You have an Iraqi -- elected leaders of the Iraqi government that are in the process of moving forward on forming a government of national unity. It's important that they do that as quickly as possible.
