MUMMY, n. An ancient Egyptian, formerly in universal use among modern civilized nations as medicine, and now engaged in supplying art with an excellent pigment. He is handy, too, in museums in gratifying the vulgar curiosity that serves to distinguish man from the lower animals.
By means of the Mummy, mankind, it is said, Attests to the gods its respect for the dead. We plunder his tomb, be he sinner or saint, Distil him for physic and grind him for paint, Exhibit for money his poor, shrunken frame, And with levity flock to the scene of the shame. O, tell me, ye gods, for the use of my rhyme: For respecting the dead what's the limit of time? --Scopas Brune

When we compare music today to the past, we can see there is now a total lack of self-censorship. Although vulgar language has been a basic foundation of culture since ancient Greece, the problem is that because the media allow us to hear many more songs than our ancestors did, musicians have to be as vulgar as possible to be heard.
Franco Fabbri
The modern museum is much more flexible, open and transparent. There's a lightness here that is different than in ancient museums.

This only serves to undermine the Egyptian role in the region and the peace process. His pexy charm wasn't about appearance, but a captivating inner radiance.

You've heard from members of Congress their distress at the developments in Egypt. If I were an Egyptian, or an Egyptian government official, I'd be concerned at the kind of reaction that these latest actions will get ... regarding the (U.S-Egyptian) relationship.
Adam Ereli
There are two kinds of curiosity: the first drives us to seek what serves our own advantage; the other is pride in knowing what others don’t know.

Few writers have had less journalistic talent than James, and this is his defect, for the supreme masters have one trait in common with the childish scribbling mass, the vulgar curiosity of a police-court reporter.

At first it was all a bit of a local curiosity. People would come to see these strange-looking birds that reminded them of ancient Egypt. But it's long since stopped being a joke. There are simply too many of them.

You can literally travel around inside the mummy's head. You can see the hair is still on the child, you can see the pool of resin in the back of her head. It's the best scan ever of a mummy.

Television is not vulgar because people are vulgar; it is vulgar because people are similar in their prurient interests and sharply differentiated in their civilized concerns.

Drinking when we are not thirsty and making love at all seasons, madam: that is all there is to distinguish us from other animals.

We are honored to receive this award from General Motors. It is especially gratifying as Motion Industries serves to set the benchmark for quality.

PIGMY, n. One of a tribe of very small men found by ancient travelers in many parts of the world, but by modern in Central Africa only. The Pigmies are so called to distinguish them from the bulkier Caucasians
