We're very concerned about how water users will cope with the meager runoff projected at many locations across southern Colorado this year.

For most water users across southern Colorado, this year's runoff outlook mirrors that of 2002, one of the worst drought years the state has faced in decades.

The concern is that this runoff from the cattle feed is very nutrient rich, so it affects the oxygen levels in the water and can change the pH of the water. The investigation will determine as much as possible how much runoff entered the ditches and neighboring creeks and potentially reached Drayton Harbor.

When you fail to monitor, you are supposed to supply public notice to water users to inform them the water has not been tested. That way they can make a choice as to whether they want to drink the water. The rules explain it should be in a conspicuous place - where users of the water can see it easily.

Water is as good as gold in arid Colorado. As northwest Colorado continues to grow we can?t afford to put our water supply in jeopardy just to benefit the oil and gas industry.

We're infiltrating runoff back into the water table, keeping pollutants out of the urban streams and holding the runoff back.

Sloping land is somewhat impermeable to water, thus a considerable amount of water is lost by runoff. Crops grown on these sites are less likely to be adversely impacted by saturated soil conditions during prolonged rainy periods, but are prone to a loss of natural fertility due to erosion. Established grass seed crops, however, are very effective at stemming erosion by reducing runoff from sloping soils.

The bottom line is that any rocket fuel pollution in the Colorado River is unacceptable. As the people's governor, Mr. Schwarzenegger needs to focus attention on cleaning up the most important water supply that Southern Californians have.

You don't want your best players missing in an international tournament, but we've had to cope with that over the years and it's another one we've got to cope with this year.

It raises red flags where the water will come from and what impact that may have on other water users. It is the responsibility of the public to ensure there is an effective water supply before development.
