With a guy coming ordsprog

With a guy coming off Tommy John surgery, it's usually the second year those guys come around. We like our defense, especially our infield defense, and its potential to be a good fit with a sinkerball pitcher.

But the surgery on Tommy John has always made me think twice. Different pitcher after surgery. OK, know that other pitchers have had the same type of surgery, but are any of them up for Hall? The Hall is sacred?

We couldn't believe it. You figured something like that would happen, because he was still coming off the surgery. He didn't seem like he was 100 percent. But we didn't think he would have Tommy John surgery.

She brings dynamic defense, both infield and outfield. Chelsea has an extremely good range. It gets us up when she makes a good play on defense and this year she's really established herself and made some great plays really setting herself above other shortstops as truly great.

I think our pitching will hold up real well. With the guys we have coming back on the infield, and our speed in the outfield, I think we'll do well defense-wise.

Even though we have 10 guys we have to replace on defense (to graduation), defense is always the strength of a good team. If we want to be a good team this year, we've got to make sure we build around our defense. We showed we're off to a decent start this year.

We went 3-8 my first year and 1-9 my second year. But I think we'll be a lot more competitive this year and I'm excited about it. We have a lot of new guys coming in and transfers. The one good thing was that a lot of younger guys got to play last year. We really only lost one player on offense and one on defense. Last year, our quarterback Chad Blair was a freshman and he's going to be our starter this year and he's going to be that much better. I think you'll see a more explosive defense. And I think you'll see a defense that, if it stays healthy, gets better as the season goes along. Our defense has the potential to improve as the year goes on. They're excited to get out there and play.

I think defense ought to be our strength. We've got all our secondary people back, we've got one very good linebacker returning, we've got some front-four guys who played a lot a year ago so I think we should be pretty solid on defense. Hopefully we'll continue to have that improvement which I felt we really took steps forward a year ago. I would hope to think that we'll continue to improve on defense.

I'm so impressed with (my players' defense). We haven't lost a step from last year. We lost our whole infield from last year, but we have some really excellent juniors who have stepped up and taken over those infield positions.

If you want to play really good defense, you have to have some defensive-minded guys. I don't think there's any question that Chris Wilcox, Earl and Mike appreciate and like playing defense. When you get guys like that, normally your defense will get better.

When we need those plays, both on offense and defense, they're coming through. We needed Marshall to come through for us on the last drive, and he did. We needed the defense to stop those guys and they did. It's nice to know we can rely on each other this year. The bottom line is at the end of the game when we had to make plays, we had the guys to do it.

The main thing we've been focusing on is our team defense and I thought our team defense was very, very good today on a very hard and fast infield. So I was pleased with that.

I keep telling the guys, 'Last year we had a good defense. It kept us in a lot of games and gave us a chance to win every game but one, and I think that's what a good defense should do,' ... But at the same time, when we started camp here Aug. 5, we had to start over.

Keep your head up because it is coming along. Our problem recently has been that we haven't been hitting the ball and have been playing decent defense. Today we hit the ball but the defense sort of slacked a little bit. If we keep our head up, eventually good things will happen. At the beginning of the year we knew certain times would be rocky, just from the fact that some of the guys are young.
