My sense from just this brief analysis is we may avoid a rate hike in August. If you believe the economy is slowing down, we may be at the end of interest rate increases.

The real short-term outlook for us is pretty positive given that we don't see a Fed rate hike in August and that due to political noise, if you will, we are not going to see a rate hike in October. But on the earnings front it is a different issue. Looking into 2000, our longer-term forecast, we've had two great years of earnings growth. If, as we expect, the economy were to show signs of a slowing by May, the Fed will want to give it the benefit of the doubt by standing pat at that point.

The most recent rate increases, and a rate hike at its next meeting, in my judgment will slow growth to an unacceptably low rate for the region and the nation.

The economy is already slowing down without the impact of that 50 basis point hike last month, and I think what you have to look at here is the ending of the interest rate cycle. The growth stocks are technology stocks. And at this time it's a very seasonal thing as well. We are coming to the end of the quarter, so you are going to just get the great stock into the portfolios and sell the weak ones.

There is no sign of the economy slowing and that's bad for the Treasury market. We're not expecting any surprises from the Fed next week, which means we'll see another rate hike. Yields have not peaked.

Liquidity is still excessive and remains a warning sign for the ECB, but the slowing of the growth rate gives the bank more time. A rate increase is more likely in March than February.
