We are able to lower the gas cost significantly because wholesale prices have been coming down.

Wholesale prices dropped significantly last week. Unless some issues happen with refineries in California, we expect prices to go down.

You may see local street prices drift lower, ... That's how far behind pump prices were in catching up to the wholesale price.

The wholesale cost of gas on average was up nearly 42 cents per gallon. In some areas as high as 60 to 70 cents cost increases have happened. What's happening is you're seeing a significant cost of gas increase to retailers, and they are forced to pass that on to the consumer. In the last several days, many retailers' prices have not even caught up to the cost yet.

Winter is not over and we still have a national energy problem to solve, but the wholesale cost of natural gas is trending down slightly and we are passing those savings along to customers. These lower prices, although still high by historical standards, should be welcome news to customers who have been challenged to pay this winter despite warmer weather.

But toward the end of the month, it's likely that pump prices will resume an upward arc. Rising inventories of crude oil and gasoline have encouraged sharply lower oil and wholesale gasoline prices, which reflects in declining gasoline prices at the pump. Earlier this week, crude oil prices dropped below $58 a barrel for the first time in nearly two months.

Wholesale gasoline prices have dropped across the country and West Coast gasoline inventory is strong. That actually led to a slight decline in pump prices in the last few days, although overall averages are still higher than at this time last week. However, oil industry analysts expect wholesale prices to start heading up again once the more expensive summer-grade fuel starts going on the market at the end of February.

Excellent cost control was seen in particular in R&D expenditure that came in significantly lower than we expected. As a result the operating and net loss was lower than expected.

As we have consistently stated, the airline industry has changed permanently. Northwest must significantly lower its costs to compete with other carriers. Many of these are legacy carriers that have already used the bankruptcy process to achieve changes in their cost structures or newer, low-cost carriers which have much lower labor and operating costs than legacy carriers.

The cost is coming down significantly while the volume is coming up significantly.

It all depends on how the bankrupt airlines ... utilize the cost savings they achieve. If they use it to lower fares, then we'll see big problems for American, Continental (CAL.N: Quote , Profile , Research ) and even the discount airlines. The cost per seat mile will be lowered fairly significantly.

There's a good opportunity for this company to sell surplus power into the wholesale market. Wholesale prices look attractive.

The main negative is pressure on margins due to increased wholesale traffic and call prices coming down.
